Plot
A mythological story about a goddess who created the entire universe. The plot revolves around the consequences when humans build a temple for their firstborn. Tumbbad was the first ever Indian film to open the prestigious International Film Critics’ Week in Venice in The Ranveer Show – Hindi: Tumbbad Unknown Facts – India’s GOAT Cinematic Film | Sohum Shah – Sequels, Theories & Hastar (2024).
In Hastar’s temple, a huge fortune is said to be hidden in a secret chamber
TUMBBAD is a small village in India where a shrine was built for a god named Hastar. He was the greedy, malicious descendant of the goddess of prosperity and was spared from extinction by the other gods only on the condition that he was never worshipped. This is not a spoilsport as it is told in the first few minutes of the book What follows is the story of what happens when human and demonic desires intersect.
This is not a good idea
Needless to say, circumstances arise which awaken Hastar from its long sleep. Vinayak Rao (Sohum Shah) is a man so driven by his greed for gold that he returns to TUMBBAD fifteen years after a horrific event to find and escape with Hastar’s treasure. In fact, Rao is an amazingly single-minded, repulsive character who is willing to do anything to get what he wants.
His family suffers greatly because of his stubborn folly
He firmly believes that he can trick a god to get his hands on his wealth. TUMBBAD is not a mere monster movie, although the creature is impressive. It’s a fantasy/horror fable, similar to something from Guillermo del Toro, that gives us something to think about while we’re scared.
This film deserves a much wider audience
Some of the plot twists are inspired, especially towards the end.
